The Hawaiian Cultural Center's purpose is to establish a place where the native Hawaiian community can learn, share and experience their culture and unique lifestyle of the "islands" right here in Utah. The Center represents an excellent resource to learn of the Hawaiian traditions, understand its rich heritage and a place to come experience the "Spirit of Aloha".
The Center is for anyone who wishes to visit, spend lunch here, or just come in to read a book or watch a video or DVD in our library area. The library has books for all ages to enjoy from our kamali'i (children) to our na makua(adult) to na kupuna (elders) featuring titles from ancient legends to Hawai'i's Royal Monarchy; ono recipes to sea life; We are adding more and more books to our collection and appreciate any suggestions. Come and relax with a favorite book or you may also check out books for resource or research.
Our Taro Patch Store carries books, handmade crafts, gifts, souvenirs, CD's/DVD's and homegrown snacks for purchase. Don't see an item you like, let our store manager know and we will try to make it available.
The Center offers hula classes and ukulele classes, plus workshops to anyone interested in participating in learning a Hawaiian art. Workshops may include Hawaiian quilting, lei-making, ipu heke making, etc. with knowledgeable instructors teaching these fine arts.
If you have been to the Center, you may have noticed our guardian Eleu, the Ki'i. Namakaeleu (The amazing eyes) was the name given by Master Carver Fonoimoana from Laie, Hawai'i. When the master carver heard about the Center he wanted to create something special for this wonderful place. Just like Eleu, many of the items on display were donated from our haumana (students) and other people who were captivated by the hard work and dedication and wanted to be a part of it.
